I have been aware of the Mouko Tanmen Nakamoto outlet under the Shinagawa station tracks for quite a while, tucked away in a corner. Sadly, for the longest time I never attempted to check it out because the decor and pictures of the ramen did not look appealing. The establishment also prominently promoted the fact that they had some of the spiciest ramen. I am a big fan of spicy food, but I have to say I have not had that many positive experiences when it comes to sampling extremely spicy ramen. Most of them just do not taste good and it is often  a novelty item. As fate would have it, I saw a ramen face-off on TV program and Mouko Tanmen was a vote favorite in both the regular ramen and tsukemen. I made it a priority to visit the branch under the Shinagawa station train tracks and I am not disappointed. In fact, I would have to say I am a fan.

Mouko Tanmen Nakamoto got it right, the soup is a very tasty blend of vegetables, black fungus mushrooms and thinly sliced pork which have been simmered for hours in a giant wok of miso broth. In my opinion, the stars on the menu are the Hiyashi Miso Tsukemen (Spiciness level 10, the highest on their menu) and Hokkyoku Ramen (Spiciness level 9). My companions on the other hand love the slightly less spicy Hiyashi Mouko Tsukemen, which also happens to be the foremost recommended item by the restaurant staff members.

If you love spicy ramen, you owe it to yourself to check out this place as soon as possible!
